Lesson 3 of 9

Get Real Reviews Without Breaking the Rules

Reviews move both customers and rankings. Ask every customer the same way, never pay for them, and answer every one.

In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 97 percent said they read online reviews for local businesses. 49 percent trust reviews from strangers about as much as recommendations from people they know. If you have no reviews, you are invisible to almost everyone who checks.

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking too. So reviews pay twice.

What Gets You in Trouble

Google removes reviews that were paid for, reviews posted because of an incentive like a discount, and reviews from people with a conflict of interest such as employees. It also bans asking only happy customers and steering unhappy ones away. That last move is called review gating.

The FTC made fake reviews a federal problem too. Its rule took effect October 21, 2024. It bans buying or selling fake reviews, paying for reviews that must be positive or negative, undisclosed insider reviews and fake "independent" review sites. Courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations.

What Works

Ask every customer, the same way, right after the job. Google allows you to send a review link or show a QR code. Make asking a habit, not a campaign.

Answer Every Review

In the same survey, 89 percent expect owners to respond, and 80 percent are likely to use a business that responds to all reviews. 50 percent are put off by generic, copy and paste replies. So write a real line back. Mention what you did for them.
